Military History / United States Navy / WWII-Era Naval Reference
The 1940 tenth edition of The Bluejackets’ Manual, the official working handbook prepared for enlisted personnel of the United States Navy. Published shortly before America entered World War II, this substantial 784-page manual provides an authentic period look at the training, regulations, responsibilities, terminology, and daily operation of the prewar U.S. Navy.
Subjects include naval organization, discipline, seamanship, shipboard duties, navigation, signaling, communications, gunnery, weapons, sailing, first aid, physical training, uniforms, naval customs, regulations, pay grades, and accounts. An excellent original reference for collectors of WWII naval history, vintage military manuals, and United States Navy material.
Tenth edition published in 1940 by the United States Naval Institute in Annapolis, Maryland. Bound in its original dark blue flexible binding with gold-colored cover and spine lettering.
Previous-owner identification appears twice: an ink stamp reading “WALLACE, J. W.” and a handwritten name reading “John W Wallace.” These markings may identify a WWII-era serviceman, but the individual’s military history has not been conclusively verified. Black ink markings are also present along the lower and outer page edges, possibly applied by the original owner as section or reference markings.
Good vintage condition with visible service-related use. The flexible binding shows rubbing, scratches, creasing, edge wear, bumped corners, and wear at the spine ends. Pages display age toning, scattered spots, and general handling wear. Previous-owner identification and exterior page-edge markings are present as photographed. The binding remains intact, and the text is clear and readable. Please review all photographs carefully for exact condition.
