Photography in America is an illustrated survey of American photographic art and history, edited by Robert Doty with an introduction by Minor White. Bringing together images dating from 1841 through the early 1970s, it traces photography’s development while preserving a striking visual record of American life.

An appealing volume for photographers, art students, and collectors of vintage photography books, with landscapes, portraits, architecture, and documentary subjects. Illustrated selections shown include Edward Weston’s Iceberg Lake and Woodlawn, Louisiana, along with Kate Matthews’s The Little Colonel.

Published by Random House in 1974 for the Whitney Museum of American Art, accompanying the museum’s 1974–1975 exhibition. The publisher describes the collection as containing 259 photographs by 86 photographers. Hardcover bound in blue cloth with black lettering, matching blue endpapers, and the original illustrated dust jacket. Printed and bound in Italy. ISBN: 0394493559.

Condition: Good overall. Cloth boards show light wear and a few small marks, with minor discoloration along the lower edge. Light age toning and a small mark to the page edges. Photographed interior pages appear clean and well preserved. Please review all photos for condition details.
