Memoirs: Ten Years and Twenty Days by Admiral Karl Doenitz. Cleveland and New York: The World Publishing Company, 1959. Stated First Edition. Translated by R. H. Stevens in collaboration with David Woodward.
Signed “Dönitz” in blue on the title page. This first American edition also retains its publisher’s review slip, announcing publication on September 28, 1959, at $6.00, and its original dust jacket with the matching unclipped price.
A handwritten ownership inscription signed Douglas Aitken records that the book was sent to him for review in 1959. He explains that he never finished reading it, took it home when his father died in October 1959, and had it shipped with his personal effects in September 1965. The inscription and accompanying review slip provide an unusual record of this copy’s early ownership.
Doenitz’s account covers German U-boat operations, wolf-pack tactics, the Battle of the Atlantic, naval command decisions, and his brief tenure as Hitler’s successor at the end of World War II.
Original black cloth boards with gilt lettering and red decoration. Red top page edges.
Condition: Visible mottling and discoloration to the boards, with rubbing and handling wear. Page edges are browned and spotted; endpapers show toning. Scattered handwritten notes, underlining, and marginal pen marks affect a limited number of pages. Dust jacket has rubbing, creasing, edge tears, chips, and losses, with staining and discoloration to its reverse. Review slip has edge wear and tears. Please examine the detailed photographs, including the signature close-ups, inscription, and condition views.
