Original May 1944 issue of The Globe Beam, published by Globe Aircraft Corporation primarily for its employees in Fort Worth, Texas. Volume III, No. 5. 16 pages including covers.
Historically significant pre-invasion issue featuring “Concerning D-Day,” an editorial published the month before the Normandy landings. It captures the anticipation of the coming Allied invasion, when people knew an invasion was approaching but its precise date and landing locations remained secret.
The editorial urges aircraft factory employees to keep wartime production moving, emphasizing that the invasion’s success depended on work at home as well as on the battlefield. It closes by encouraging workers to stop “WAITING for D-Day” and begin “WORKING for it.” A compelling contemporary account of home-front morale and industrial preparation before D-Day.
The red cover and a separate illustrated feature highlight the Curtiss C-46 Commando, its Air Transport Command service, and supply flights over the Himalayan “Hump” between India and China. This coverage is separate from the pre-invasion editorial; the C-46 did not participate in the Normandy landings.
Additional contents include employee production improvements, test pilot Boyd “Red” Speer, Texas aviation events, factory family day, Hall of Honor, and employee news.
Good to very good vintage condition. Covers show light soiling, surface rubbing, small creases, and edge wear, with small chips along the spine and upper spine corner. Light age toning and occasional small spots are visible. Photographed interior pages are clean overall, with clear text and photographs. Please review all photos for condition details.
