Fabre’s Book of Insects — an illustrated work of natural history exploring insect behavior through Jean-Henri Fabre’s observations, retold by Mrs. Rodolph Stawell from Alexander Teixeira de Mattos’ translation of Souvenirs Entomologiques.

For nature lovers and collectors of illustrated books, Fabre’s engaging accounts encourage patient observation and a deeper appreciation of small creatures, while Edward Julius Detmold’s color artwork brings their intricate forms into focus.

Published by Dodd, Mead and Company, New York, 1926. An early printing of the work originally copyrighted in 1921.

Hardcover in green cloth with elaborate gilt decoration and lettering on the front cover and spine. The rear cover features a blind-stamped insect design. Includes a gilt top page edge, unevenly trimmed fore-edges, a title page printed in red and black, and mounted color illustrations on ochre-colored leaves with tissue guards. Photographed plates depict scarab beetles and grasshoppers.

Condition: Fair. The front inner hinge is cracked, exposing the underlying binding material. Cloth shows rubbing, pale spotting, scattered marks, and wear and fraying at the corners and spine ends. A noticeable notch with cloth loss affects the upper edge of the rear board, with corresponding abrasion to the top page edge. Page edges are browned, with roughness and small chips to the unevenly trimmed edges. The photographed interior pages and color illustrations remain attractive and readable.
