Insect Life: An Introduction to Nature-Study by John Henry Comstock is an illustrated guide to insects and outdoor observation, offered here in the 1911 Edition in Colors, published by D. Appleton and Company.

For naturalists, gardeners, and collectors of illustrated science books, this volume encourages closer observation of the natural world, bringing greater understanding and appreciation to the small creatures encountered outdoors.

Written for teachers, students, and others interested in outdoor life, the book features full-page plates reproducing insects in natural colors, alongside original illustrations engraved by Anna Botsford Comstock. The photographed moth frontispiece provides a striking example of its natural-history artwork.

Hardcover in green cloth, with gilt spine lettering and a decorative butterfly illustration on the front cover. The title page is dated 1911; the copyright page lists 1897 and 1901.

Condition: Fair. Cloth covers show rubbing, uneven discoloration, corner wear, and fraying with small losses at the spine ends. The binding is split near the title page, exposing the underlying mesh, with additional cracking at the front endpaper hinge. Pages and edges show age toning, with visible foxing around the illustrated frontispiece. A previous owner’s name and pencil notations appear on the front endpaper. The decorative cover remains attractive, and the photographed text is readable. Please review all photographs for condition details.
