By the Way by Agness Greene Foster is an illustrated collection of travel letters capturing journeys through Europe and European and Asiatic Turkey. For collectors of women’s travel writing and readers interested in historic places, its personal reflections offer a deeper appreciation of the architecture, art, and everyday experiences of travel in the early twentieth century.

1910 revised and enlarged edition, published by Paul Elder & Company, San Francisco. The copyright page records the original 1903 copyright by Agness Greene Foster and the 1910 copyright by Paul Elder and Company. This expanded edition adds material concerning Turkey, Greece, Austria-Hungary, and Germany.

Bound in decorative textured cloth with ornamental borders and stylized floral motifs. Illustrated with photographic views, including Trinity College in Dublin, Dunluce Castle, and the National Gallery overlooking London’s Trafalgar Square.

The front endpaper contains a lengthy handwritten gift inscription with a Christmas greeting and a signature appearing to read “Agness Greene Foster.” Handwritten dates reading “1856–1928” appear beneath the inscription; their meaning is unconfirmed. The signature is shown clearly in the photographs for examination, and author attribution has not been independently authenticated.

Condition: Fair. Cloth shows rubbing, age-darkening, faded lettering, and wear to the corners. The spine head is frayed with some cloth loss, and portions of the front joint are split. The front inner hinge is cracked. Pages show toning, uneven edges, and scattered edge wear and small tears. The photographed text and illustrations remain clear. Please review all photographs for condition and inscription details.
