African Exploration / Missionary History / Victorian Travel. An original 1861 edition of Livingstone’s Travels and Researches in South Africa, drawn from the personal narrative of legendary Scottish explorer and missionary David Livingstone. Published in Philadelphia by J. W. Bradley, this substantial antique volume chronicles Livingstone’s sixteen years in Africa and his historic journey across the continent from the Atlantic coast to the Indian Ocean.

Illustrated throughout with numerous detailed engravings depicting African landscapes, wildlife, communities, expeditions, and dramatic events from Livingstone’s travels. The original brown cloth binding is especially striking, featuring an embossed lion scene on both covers and decorative lettering along the spine.

The book displays beautifully for its age, with fading along the spine, rubbing, edge wear, and some fraying at the spine ends. Interior exhibits expected age toning, foxing, previous library markings and bookplates, and wear around the title-page area as photographed. A remarkable surviving 165-year-old account of African exploration with outstanding decorative binding.
