An exceptionally well-preserved World War I first edition with a striking original pictorial binding. The Yanks Are Coming! by William Slavens McNutt was published by The Page Company of Boston in 1918. The copyright page expressly states “First Impression, September, 1918.”
Written while World War I was still underway, this illustrated account captures the training, character, humor, and daily experiences of American soldiers preparing for overseas service. McNutt visited military installations throughout the country, including Camps Upton, Devens, Funston, Lewis, and Lee, as well as the Army Ambulance Camp in Allentown. The book contains period photographs and illustrations depicting marksmanship instruction, trench training, camp life, and the men who would become America’s First World War soldiers.
McNutt later became a prominent Hollywood screenwriter and received two Academy Award nominations, including one for The Lives of a Bengal Lancer.
This copy is especially desirable for its remarkably clean and vivid original red cloth binding. The applied soldier illustration, blue star, and white cover lettering remain bright and visually impressive more than a century after publication. The binding is secure, the endpapers are clean, and the interior is clean overall with no writing noted. Mild spine fading, normal age toning, occasional light foxing, and limited exterior wear are present. The fore-edge is untrimmed, creating the naturally irregular page edges characteristic of the original production. No dust jacket.
Complete with the author portrait frontispiece, photographic and illustrated plates, 267 numbered pages, and publisher advertisements at the rear. A handsome first-impression copy with outstanding display appeal for a collector of World War I history, American military history, or patriotic Americana.
Please review all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the condition description.
