The Republic’s Private Navy: The American Privateering Business as Practiced by Baltimore During the War of 1812 by Jerome R. Garitee. Published for Mystic Seaport by Wesleyan University Press as Volume VIII of the American Maritime Library.

This extensively researched history examines Baltimore’s privateering industry during the War of 1812. Rather than concentrating only on famous sea captains and battles, Garitee explores the investors, merchants, shipbuilders, vessel owners, crews, financing arrangements, commercial networks, captured prizes, and distribution of profits that made American privateering possible.

The book covers Baltimore’s rise as a privateering center, its maritime elite, preparations and recruitment, operations at sea, captured vessels, division of spoils, and the industry’s aftermath. Appendices document private armed vessels owned by Baltimoreans, making this an excellent reference for historians, maritime collectors, genealogists, and readers interested in the War of 1812.

First edition published in 1977. Hardcover with original illustrated, price-unclipped dust jacket. The cloth binding and interior remain very clean, solid, and well preserved. Dust jacket shows edge wear, rubbing, creasing, small tears, and a larger closed tear near the lower front panel. A retail price sticker remains on the rear jacket.
