Historical Significance
This exceptional association copy of The Pacific brings together the people who lived the history, the historian who preserved it, and the principal actors who portrayed it for HBO.
It is a first edition, first printing signed or inscribed by 12 United States Marine Corps veterans of the Pacific War, author and historical consultant Hugh Ambrose, and the three principal actors whose performances anchor the HBO miniseries: Jon Seda as John Basilone, Joseph Mazzello as Eugene “Sledgehammer” Sledge, and James Badge Dale as Robert Leckie.
Most importantly, this appears to have been the personal copy of Staff Sergeant Fred E. Miller of K Company, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines. Miller signed the book and is the named recipient of several personalized inscriptions from fellow Marines, Hugh Ambrose, and the cast. This direct association transforms the volume from a conventionally signed book into a personal record of remembrance shared among the veterans, author, and actors connected to The Pacific.
The accompanying original color photograph shows 19 Marines gathered with Hugh Ambrose at the Strategic Air and Space Museum near Ashland, Nebraska, on May 21–22, 2010. A contemporary account of the gathering records that the veterans signed autographs and answered questions about their wartime experiences. Hugh Ambrose and Clarence Rea are among those specifically identified in the published photograph.
