Military history / Native American history. An exceptional, museum-worthy signed copy of Doris A. Paul’s The Navajo Code Talkers, documenting the Navajo Marines whose unbroken battlefield code played a vital role in America’s Pacific campaign during World War II.
This remarkable association copy contains 11 original signatures representing 10 Navajo Code Talkers, with George H. Kirk signing twice. The veterans recorded their Marine divisions beside many of their signatures, creating a direct connection to their wartime service across multiple Pacific combat units.
The signatures include veterans identified with the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th Marine Divisions. Among the clearly identifiable signers are George H. Kirk, Francis T. Thompson, Leonard Begay, Dean Wilson, Wilmer Benally, and Raymond R. Smith, along with additional signed names shown clearly in the photographs. George H. Kirk is especially historically notable and appears in celebrated wartime photographs operating radio equipment in the Pacific.
Hardcover Dorrance edition with the original dust jacket. Illustrated throughout with historical photographs, organizational information, the Navajo military vocabulary, and the story of how the code was developed and employed. The book also retains its printed endorsement from President Richard Nixon.
Black cloth binding remains attractive and structurally sound. Pages are generally clean with age-related toning and scattered foxing, particularly around the signed endpapers. Dust jacket shows rubbing, surface wear, edge wear, small tears, and general aging as pictured. Please examine all photographs closely; every signature and significant condition detail has been documented.
This is not merely an author-signed book. It is a substantial gathering of authentic signatures from the actual Navajo Marines whose language, ingenuity, and courage created one of the most successful military communication systems in history. With nearly all Navajo Code Talkers now deceased, multi-signed copies have become increasingly difficult to assemble or replace.
A centerpiece for an advanced collection of World War II, United States Marine Corps, Native American, military communications, cryptography, or Code Talker history.
