The Last Frontier: The White Man’s War for Civilisation in Africa by E. Alexander Powell, F.R.G.S., late of the American Consular Service in Egypt. Published in New York by Charles Scribner’s Sons, 1914.

An impressive early 20th-century account of Africa during the final decades of European colonial expansion, written by noted American journalist, traveler, and diplomat E. Alexander Powell.

The volume covers Powell’s observations and travels across Africa and provides a fascinating period view of the continent, its peoples, colonial powers, transportation, cities, and rapidly changing political landscape immediately before World War I.

Illustrated with sixteen full-page photographic illustrations and retaining the particularly desirable large folding color map of Africa, showing railways and the contemporary British, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Belgian, and Spanish spheres of influence. The map makes this an especially interesting historical reference for collectors of African, colonial, exploration, cartographic, and pre-WWI material.

Original red cloth hardcover with gilt lettering to the spine. The binding remains attractive and presents well, with expected age-related wear, rubbing/fading to the cloth, and wear at the spine ends and extremities. Pages show normal age toning. Interior appears generally clean and well preserved. Folding map is present and displays very nicely.

Please examine all photographs carefully for the exact condition and contents of the book. Photographs show the actual copy offered for sale.
