American History / Prohibition / Law Enforcement — Scarce signed first edition of Prohibition Inside Out by Roy A. Haynes, United States Prohibition Commissioner during the height of National Prohibition.

Published by Doubleday, Page & Company, Garden City, New York. The copyright page explicitly states “First Edition.”

This is an especially desirable association with the history it documents because the book has been personally inscribed and signed by author Roy A. Haynes on the front free endpaper. The presentation inscription reads approximately:

“To my friend J. Connelly, with my personal regards and all good wishes for continued success — Roy A. Haynes.”

Haynes was one of the central federal officials charged with enforcing National Prohibition. Written while the Eighteenth Amendment and Volstead Act were still in force, Prohibition Inside Out presents an extraordinary contemporary insider account of federal efforts to suppress the illegal liquor trade.

Subjects discussed include bootlegging, rum-running, liquor smuggling, international conspiracies, enforcement operations, seizures by federal agencies, illicit distilling, poisoned and adulterated alcohol, illegal whiskey, enforcement difficulties and the enormous underground trade created during Prohibition.

Of particular historical interest is the foreword by President Warren G. Harding, dated June 11, 1923, in which Harding publicly supports enforcement of the Eighteenth Amendment and the work of the Prohibition Department. Harding’s signature reproduced beneath the foreword is part of the printed book and is not a handwritten presidential signature.

Author: Roy A. Haynes

Pages: xiv + 308

Signed: Personally inscribed and signed by Roy A. Haynes

Condition: Good antique condition with substantial age-related wear. Original red cloth remains attractive overall with gilt lettering still visible on the front board. Spine is noticeably faded compared with the boards and shows rubbing, fraying and cloth loss/wear at the ends, particularly at the head. Corners and board edges show wear. Page edges are age-toned, with the fore-edge retaining its intentionally rough/deckled appearance. Interior pages remain generally clean and very readable with normal toning consistent with age. Binding shows age and use but remains together. Previous small notation is present near the rear endpaper. The signed presentation inscription appears on the front free endpaper. No dust jacket. Please examine all photographs carefully for exact condition.

A remarkable surviving piece of Prohibition-era history written and signed by the federal official charged with enforcing Prohibition itself. Particularly suited to collections of Prohibition, bootlegging, organized crime history, federal law enforcement, Warren G. Harding, presidential history or twentieth-century Americana.

Decorative page holder shown in photographs is for display only and is not included.
