Afghanistan / Great Game / British Diplomacy — Scarce signed presentation copy of the 1967 Oxford University Press third edition of W. K. Fraser-Tytler’s Afghanistan: A Study of Political Developments in Central and Southern Asia, extensively revised by Sir Michael Cavenagh Gillett.
This is an especially desirable association copy because Gillett was not simply the reviser of the book. He had served as British Ambassador to Afghanistan from 1957 to 1963, giving him firsthand diplomatic experience in the country whose modern political and diplomatic history he was responsible for updating in this edition.
The front endpaper is personally inscribed by Gillett in red ink:
“Anne Bancroft
from
Michael (Gillett)
Wembury Cottage
’67”
The inscription is particularly appealing because it is dated 1967—the year this third edition was published.
Also retained with the book is the original printed “With the Author’s compliments” presentation slip, further strengthening its character as a presentation copy.
Fraser-Tytler’s Afghanistan is an important historical study of Afghanistan’s strategic position at the crossroads of Central and Southern Asia. This substantially revised third edition incorporates Gillett’s updates to the country’s political and diplomatic history.
Subjects include Afghanistan’s rulers and dynasties, the Hindu Kush, British and Russian rivalry, the Great Game, the Anglo-Afghan Wars, the North-West Frontier, tribal politics, relations with India and Pakistan, international diplomacy and Afghanistan’s longstanding strategic importance between competing regional and world powers.
