American exploration and Western Americana. Lewis and Clarke’s Journal to the Rocky Mountains in the Years 1804, -5, -6; As Related by Patrick Gass, One of the Officers in the Expedition. Published in Dayton, Ohio, by Ells, Claflin & Co. in 1847.

Scarce early illustrated edition of Patrick Gass’s firsthand account of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Gass served with the Corps of Discovery and became the first expedition member to publish an account of the journey. This edition contains an engraved frontispiece, portraits of Captains Lewis and Clark, and numerous woodcut illustrations depicting the expedition, Indigenous encounters, landscapes, wildlife, camps, and travel across the American West.

Bound in its original period speckled calf with gilt rules and the original red leather spine label. Complete with 238 numbered pages followed by the publisher’s advertisement.

Condition is good for its age. Original leather binding shows substantial rubbing, scuffing, edge wear, corner wear, and deterioration at the spine ends. The boards remain attached. Interior hinges show age and wear but remain intact. Pages display moderate scattered foxing, toning, staining, and occasional spots. An early blue-ink ownership inscription appears on the front endpaper. No loose or missing text pages were observed. Please examine all photographs closely for the exact condition.
