Occult History, Paranormal Research & Early Experimental Psychology

An original 1890 edition of Proceedings of the Society for Psychical Research, Volume VI, containing Parts XV–XVII and covering 1889–1890. Published in London by Kegan Paul, Trench, Trübner and Co.

Founded in 1882, the Society for Psychical Research was among the earliest organizations to apply organized scientific investigation to paranormal and psychological phenomena. This substantial 707-page volume preserves important Victorian-era studies involving apparitions occurring after death, trance phenomena, clairvoyance, hypnotic lucidity, thought-transference, séances, automatic and motor phenomena, crystal vision, hallucinations, hysteria, and double personality.

Notable contributors and subjects include Frederic W. H. Myers, Frank Podmore, Henry Sidgwick, Pierre Janet, Edmund Gurney, Oliver Lodge, Richard Hodgson, and William James. Includes the unusual illustrated experimental plate shown in the photographs, along with the complete index.

Original green cloth hardcover with gilt spine lettering. Binding remains secure and the volume is complete through page 707. Exterior shows expected age-related wear, including rubbing and fading, softened corners, spine-end wear, and small areas of cloth loss. Page edges are darkened, and the interior displays scattered toning, foxing, and occasional discoloration. An old bookseller’s label appears on the rear pastedown. No severe writing or missing pages observed. Please review all photographs carefully for exact condition.

A scarce primary source from the formative period of organized paranormal research and experimental psychology.
