Atomic-age military history, nuclear-weapons research, and early Cold War medicine come together in this exceptionally scarce technical study prepared for the Research and Development Division of the Office of the Surgeon General, United States Army. Titled A Study of the Physical Basis of Burn Production with Applications to the Defensive Reactions to an Atomic Bomb Air Burst, the report examines the thermal radiation produced by an atomic explosion, the resulting effects on human skin, burn distances, atmospheric influences, and the extremely limited time available for evasive action. The introductory statement explains that the investigation was intended to assist burn-research projects, the planning of experiments in future atomic-bomb tests, and atomic defense. Approximately 94 pages with numerous equations, technical tables, graphs, and diagrams. This appears to be an early circa-1950 institutional report or prepublication study rather than the more generally distributed later reference material. Staple-bound paper covers show age toning, edge wear, small corner creases, handwritten markings, ownership stamps, and former institutional-library identification. An illustrated medical bookplate and an old handwritten catalog slip remain inside. Pages show mild age-related wear but appear clean and readable overall. Please examine all photographs for the exact condition and contents of this highly unusual surviving Army atomic-research report.
