LITERARY BIOGRAPHY • BLOOMSBURY GROUP • BRITISH CULTURAL HISTORY
Complete two-volume first American edition of Lytton Strachey: A Critical Biography by Michael Holroyd, published by Holt, Rinehart and Winston in 1968. Both volumes state “First Edition” and retain their original dust jackets and publisher’s slipcase.
The set contains:
Volume I — The Unknown Years, 1880–1910
Volume II — The Years of Achievement, 1910–1932
Holroyd’s landmark biography follows Strachey from his formative years through his emergence as a central figure of the Bloomsbury Group and one of the writers who transformed modern biography. Holroyd was granted exceptional access to Strachey’s papers and unpublished correspondence, allowing him to examine not only the public author but also the friendships, private relationships and intellectual tensions surrounding Virginia Woolf, John Maynard Keynes, Dora Carrington and the larger Bloomsbury circle. The volumes are illustrated with numerous photographs and portraits.
Especially suited to readers and collectors interested in the Bloomsbury Group, Virginia Woolf, British modernism, literary biography, queer history and twentieth-century intellectual life.
Beyond documenting one writer’s life, this biography reveals how a relatively small circle of unconventional thinkers challenged inherited Victorian ideas about art, sexuality, friendship and social respectability. It can deepen the reader’s understanding of how personal relationships shape creative movements—and encourage a broader view of biography as a way of interpreting culture, identity and historical change.
CONDITION: Complete two-volume hardcover set with both original dust jackets and the original slipcase. The books are solid and square with clean-looking pages and numerous photographic illustrations. Dust jackets show considerable age toning and sunning, particularly along the spines. Volume II’s front jacket has a prominent circular cup stain with associated brown streaking. Jackets also have edge wear, small chips and short tears, including wear at the spine ends. Slipcase remains structurally sound but shows rubbing, scuffs and moderate wear at the edges and corners. Please review all photographs for the exact condition.
