Nineteenth-century American biography and presidential history from The Young American’s Library. This 1868 illustrated book will appeal to collectors of Andrew Jackson, the War of 1812, and early books written for young readers. Its account follows Jackson through his military career, including the fighting around Fort Bowyer, while using anecdotes to present his character. Reading it today offers two layers of history: Jackson’s life and the way Americans chose to portray him in the years after the Civil War. Published by Lee and Shepard of Boston. A handwritten ownership inscription dated 1882 adds a trace of the book’s later life. Condition is poor: the green cloth is heavily rubbed and worn through at the spine ends and corners; the front and rear inner hinges are damaged with binding material exposed. There is substantial foxing and staining, especially on the early pages, plus writing at the front. Please review the photos closely for the binding and page condition.
