IRISH LITERATURE • POETRY • FOLKLORE • CULTURAL HISTORY

Two original volumes from Irish Literature: Irish Authors and Their Writings in Ten Volumes, published by P. F. Collier & Son in 1904. Included are Volume IV, covering authors from Mary Furlong through Douglas Hyde, and Volume VII, covering James S. H. Monsell through Percy Somers Payne. The larger series was edited by Justin McCarthy with associate editors Maurice F. Egan, Douglas Hyde, Lady Gregory, and James Jeffrey Roche.

These volumes will appeal to collectors of Irish literature, poetry, folklore, cultural history, the Gaelic Revival, and early twentieth-century illustrated books. They gather biographical introductions and representative writings from numerous Irish authors, poets, dramatists, storytellers, historians, and public figures. Volume IV includes an illustrated frontispiece depicting the Meeting of the Waters in the Vale of Avoca.

Published during the height of the Irish Literary Revival, this collection preserves a broad view of Ireland’s literary inheritance at a moment when language, folklore, poetry, and history were becoming central to the country’s modern cultural identity. Reading across different writers allows the reader to see how literature carried collective memory, regional tradition, political feeling, humor, faith, and national consciousness across generations. The books provide both original reading material and a historical record of how Irish literature was presented to an international audience in 1904.

This offering contains Volumes IV and VII only and is not the complete ten-volume set. Both green cloth hardcovers show considerable age-related wear, including rubbing, frayed spine ends and corners, bumped edges, and darkened page edges. Volume IV has a cracked and weakened front interior hinge with binding material exposed, and its cover is becoming loose. The pages show expected toning but remain readable. Illustrations and contents are included only as shown; plate completeness has not been independently verified. Please examine all photographs carefully for condition.
