A scarce original 1864 collection of American poetry published during the Civil War. Written by C. W. Lownsbury and printed at the Office of the True Democrat in Ypsilanti, Michigan. The title poem contains martial imagery concerning warfare, armed conflict, sacrifice, destruction, and glory, giving the volume added Civil War-era historical interest.
The book retains its original dark green embossed cloth binding with gilt spine lettering. A period “Custom Binding” label from Dr. Chase’s Publication Office in Ann Arbor, Michigan, appears inside the front cover. This is an uncommon regional Michigan imprint with very limited representation in the current marketplace.
Condition is acceptable antique. Covers show rubbing, corner wear, small areas of cloth loss, and general age-related wear. Page edges are heavily toned. Endpapers have extensive discoloration and foxing. Interior pages show scattered to moderate foxing. The front inner hinge is cracked with exposed binding material, and the rear hinge also shows weakness and separation, although the text block remains housed in the covers. Old pencil notation appears on the front endpaper. Please examine all photographs carefully for the exact condition.
