Scarce original 1990 Rutgers University doctoral dissertation by Deborah Jean Figg, Thermally and Optically Driven Spin-State Transitions in Iron(II) Complexes, completed for the Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry under Professor Rolfe H. Herber.

An especially desirable association copy, apparently retained within the author’s family. The front endpaper is personally inscribed “To Mom & Dad / Love Debbie.” The dissertation approval page also bears four handwritten committee signatures, including dissertation director Rolfe H. Herber.

The research examines thermally and optically driven spin-state transitions and light-induced excited spin-state trapping (LIESST) in iron(II) complexes, using techniques including variable-temperature FTIR, SQUID magnetic susceptibility, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy. Illustrated throughout with scientific graphs, spectra, and experimental data.

Bound in blue cloth with gilt lettering to the front board and spine. Binding remains solid and interior pages appear clean and well preserved. Exterior shows noticeable shelf/storage wear, rubbing, scuffs, and marks, particularly to the rear board and spine area, as shown in the photographs.

An unusual primary research artifact from the early development of light-induced spin-crossover chemistry, made substantially more interesting by its author’s-family provenance and original committee signatures.
