Jewish immigrant history, Virginia history, and a deeply personal family memoir. Darling Loraine: The Story of A. Louis Drucker, a Grateful Jewish Immigrant was written by his daughter, Barbara Drucker Smith, and privately published by Louraine Publishing in Newport News, Virginia, in 2000.

This copy is personally inscribed and signed by the author on the title page in May 2003:

“For Sophia—

I have admired you and your poetry for many years. Your seminar was insightful. Thanks for sharing.

Bless you

Love,

Barbara”

Born in 1889, A. Louis Drucker arrived in New York as a Jewish immigrant with $50 in his pocket before establishing his life in Newport News. He lived to age 96 and left a lasting philanthropic legacy through scholarships at Thomas Nelson Community College, Hampton University, and Christopher Newport University.

Compiled from family correspondence, journals, photographs, poetry, and historical accounts, the book follows Drucker’s immigrant experience, his marriage to Loraine, and the family’s life amid the development of Newport News from 1915 through the end of the twentieth century. Its contents connect Jewish-American history with local Hampton Roads history and include observations of Prohibition, the Great Depression, Franklin D. Roosevelt, European travel, the Holocaust, and the changing social and commercial life of Newport News.

Illustrated throughout with historical photographs and family material. This is an uncommon, locally published work with particularly strong relevance for collectors of Virginia history, Newport News and Hampton Roads history, Jewish-American immigration, genealogy, and privately printed family memoirs.

Softcover shows moderate shelf wear, rubbing, light soiling, corner wear, and a few small surface marks. Binding remains secure and the interior is clean overall. Author inscription and signature appear on the title page; no other writing noted. Please review all photographs carefully for the exact condition and contents.
