Abraham Lincoln / Civil War / Presidential & American History — 1890 First Edition, 9-Volume Set

An impressive original 1890 first-edition run of Abraham Lincoln: A History by John G. Nicolay and John Hay, published in New York by The Century Co.

Nine matching volumes are included: Volumes II through X (2–10). Volume I is not included.

This monumental history was written by two men uniquely positioned to document Abraham Lincoln and his presidency. John G. Nicolay and John Hay served as Lincoln’s private secretaries and possessed extraordinary firsthand knowledge of his administration. Their work drew upon Lincoln’s papers and became one of the foundational early histories of Lincoln and the Civil War era.

Across these volumes, Nicolay and Hay chronicle Lincoln’s political rise, the slavery crisis, Lincoln-Douglas debates, presidential election, secession, the Civil War, military campaigns, emancipation, political leadership and the preservation of the Union. The work remains historically significant not simply as a biography, but as an enormous contemporary history of the United States through the Civil War era.

All nine volumes retain their matching original green cloth bindings with gilt-lettered and decorated spines and top edges gilt (TEG). The fore and bottom page edges are not gilt. Displayed together, the green cloth and extensive gold spine decoration give the set outstanding 19th-century shelf presence.

Extensively illustrated throughout with portraits, photographs, maps, facsimiles and other historical imagery, including images derived from period photographs, daguerreotypes and ambrotypes of Lincoln and numerous major political and military figures of the era.

Condition: Overall attractive antique condition for this substantial nine-volume set dating to 1890. The matching green cloth bindings retain strong visual appeal, with the gilt spine titles and decoration remaining prominent across the run. The gilt top edges remain visible. Interiors generally present nicely with clean, readable text and numerous illustrations.

Expected age-related wear is present throughout, including rubbing, scuffs and marks to the cloth, wear at corners and spine extremities, page toning and age-related wear to the exposed fore and bottom page edges. Volume X has more noticeable light-colored marks to the spine. One volume shows notable binding/hinge separation as photographed. Additional age-related binding wear may be present.

This listing is for nine volumes only — Volumes II through X. Volume I is absent.

Please examine all photographs carefully for the exact condition and contents. The photographs show the actual nine-volume set being offered.

A handsome and increasingly difficult-to-find 1890 first-edition run of one of the foundational works of Lincoln scholarship, with tremendous historical content and exceptional shelf presence for a collection devoted to Abraham Lincoln, the Civil War, American presidents or 19th-century American history.
