Virginia local history and genealogy—this 1996 Centennial Edition reproduces Chataigne’s Peninsula Directory of 1896–97, an extraordinary record of life across Newport News, Hampton, Chesapeake City, Old Point, and the surrounding Virginia Peninsula at the close of the nineteenth century.
Its hundreds of entries document residents’ names, occupations, employers, boarding locations, street addresses, businesses, churches, government offices, secret societies, and other community institutions. Period advertisements preserve the region’s commercial history, including shipbuilding, rail transportation, real estate, hotels, tradesmen, employment agencies, typewriters, construction suppliers, and other enterprises operating during the era.
Especially valuable for genealogists, family historians, researchers, and collectors interested in Hampton Roads, Newport News Shipbuilding, African American labor history, post–Civil War Virginia, and the development of the Lower Peninsula. This edition also includes a foreword and 28 pages of additional photographs, illustrations, and historical material assembled by Dorothy Rouse-Bottom.
Published in paperback by Port Hampton Press for the William E. Rouse Library in 1996. Approximately 427 pages.
Condition shows cover and edge wear, foxing along the upper page edges, and bending/creasing around several lower page corners. The interior remains generally clean and readable. Please review all photographs for exact condition.
