American Photographs: The First Century, from the Isaacs Collection in the National Museum of American Art by Merry A. Foresta. Published by Smithsonian Institution Press, 1996. Illustrated softcover.

A beautifully illustrated survey of early American photography featuring historic portraits, Native American subjects, Western landscapes, Civil War-era imagery, and everyday life. Large photographic reproductions reveal the detail and artistry of the original images, making this an appealing reference for photography collectors, American history enthusiasts, and readers interested in nineteenth-century visual culture.

Published to accompany the Smithsonian exhibition held November 22, 1996–April 20, 1997. Includes an introductory essay, extensive photographic plates, an exhibition catalogue, an afterword by Charles Isaacs, and a bibliography. The striking front cover reproduces In Winter, Kiowa, 1898, credited to Frank A. Rinehart, possibly Adolf F. Muhr.

Very Good overall condition, with light surface rubbing and minor edge and corner wear to the illustrated covers. Slight cover curl and light age toning. The photographed interior pages appear clean, with attractive photographic reproductions. Please review all photographs for condition and details.
