Cherokee History & Native American Genealogy — A scarce three-volume reference set preserving the extensive genealogical notes of Dr. Emmet Starr, one of the foundational historians and genealogists of the Cherokee people. Edited and annotated by Jack D. Baker and David Keith Hampton and issued by Baker Publishing Company in Oklahoma City.
Starr’s published History of the Cherokee Indians contained family trees for 37 prominent Cherokee families, but many of his more expansive original records remained in the Manuscript and Archives Division of the Oklahoma Historical Society. These volumes bring crucial portions of that underlying research into print, preserving thousands of biographical and genealogical entries compiled between approximately 1892 and 1921.
The set includes:
Volume One: Letter Books A–F, published 1988.
Volume Two: Letter Books G–L and Index to the Letter Books, published 1988.
Volume Three: Grant Family, published 1987.
The letter books expand upon individuals identified throughout Starr’s genealogical tables, recording births, marriages, deaths, family relationships, residences, public service, military history, and other biographical details. Volume Three concentrates specifically on the extensive Grant family line. Together, the books provide an unusually deep primary-reference resource for Cherokee descendants, tribal historians, libraries, genealogical societies, and researchers of Indian Territory and Oklahoma history.
Matching red cloth hardcovers with gilt lettering and ornamentation. The bindings remain intact, and the interiors are readable and largely clean. Volume One has light foxing across the top page edge. Volume Two has mild but clearly noticeable water damage, including staining along a portion of the top page edge and corresponding staining near the upper margins of the endpapers and some adjacent leaves, as photographed. Volume Two also has wear and bumping at the upper spine. The covers show scattered shelf wear, rubbing, and small marks. Volume Three has lighter exterior wear. Please examine all photographs closely for the exact condition and extent of the damage.
