Edited and introduced by Mark Haworth-Booth. Published by Aperture in 1984 in association with the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Victoria and Albert Museum. Hardcover in gray cloth with gilt lettering and the original illustrated dust jacket. ISBN: 0893811440.

The volume draws on photographs from the Victoria and Albert Museum and other major museum and archival collections. Featured photographers include William Henry Fox Talbot, Julia Margaret Cameron, David Octavius Hill and Robert Adamson, and Roger Fenton. Subjects range from rural villages and architectural ruins to portraits and early documentary photography. Published in conjunction with the exhibition of the same name.
