Native American regional history and genealogy. This scarce 1984 reference compiles the 1860 census of free inhabitants living in the Indian lands west of Arkansas—present-day Oklahoma Indian Territory. Compiled by Carole Ellsworth and Sue Emler of Oklahoma Roots Research from the original National Archives microfilmed census, NARA publication M653, Roll No. 52.
The 48-page compilation organizes census entries geographically across the Creek, Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, and Seminole Nations. Entries may provide names, ages, sex, occupations, birthplaces, and racial classifications. The Creek Nation section additionally notes certain individuals married to Native people and whether they had been adopted into the tribe. Includes an explanatory introduction, abbreviation guide, detailed map of the Indian nations and districts in 1860, and a surname index.
Please note that this census primarily recorded free non-Native inhabitants residing within the Five Nations rather than providing a complete census of each tribe’s Native population. It remains a valuable and difficult-to-find resource for Oklahoma, Indian Territory, Five Tribes, African American, and family-history research.
Plastic-comb-bound softcover containing 48 pages. The covers show light handling and minor age-related wear, including mild discoloration and a small mark on the rear cover. Interior pages are clean and readable, the map is present, and the comb binding remains intact. No significant writing or damage observed. Please review all photographs for the exact condition.
