Scarce signed first edition of Upward: A History of Norfolk State University (1935–1975) by Lyman Beecher Brooks, published by Howard University Press in 1983.
Signed and dated “11/4/83” by Lyman Beecher Brooks on the front free endpaper. Brooks served as Norfolk State’s longtime leader and first president, guiding the institution’s transformation from a small junior college into Norfolk State University. He passed away the following year, making signed copies especially desirable.
This substantial illustrated history chronicles Norfolk State’s founding, growth, leadership, academic development, student life, and athletics. It also documents the challenges and achievements involved in building a historically Black institution of higher education during segregation and periods of major social change. An important volume for collectors of HBCU history, African American education, Virginia history, Norfolk memorabilia, and signed books.
Hardcover with original dust jacket. The book remains securely bound with generally clean interior pages. Previous-owner writing appears at the top of the signed front endpaper. Minor moisture staining is present along the bottom area of the book and dust jacket, as shown. Light spotting and discoloration appear along the page edges. The dust jacket has age-related toning, staining, edge tears, creasing, rubbing, and small areas of loss. Please carefully review all photographs for the exact condition.
