Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio, translated and annotated by noted British sinologist Herbert A. Giles. This 1969 Dover edition is an unabridged republication of the third revised 1916 edition and contains 164 stories from Pu Sung-ling’s celebrated collection of traditional Chinese tales.

The stories explore ghosts, spirits, devils, Taoist magic, supernatural events, mysterious countries, romance, humor, horror, and everyday life in historical China. Giles provides annotations and background that help English-language readers understand the folklore, customs, and cultural setting behind the tales. An appealing collection for readers of Chinese literature, mythology, ghost stories, weird fiction, supernatural folklore, and classic horror.

This was originally a Dover paperback that was rebound into a sturdy hardcover for library use, with the original illustrated covers preserved. Former library copy with stamps, withdrawn/discarded markings, labels, handwritten notations, and other institutional marks. Covers show rubbing, staining, edge wear, and small punctures or tears to the cloth. The binding has noticeable separation/loosening near the front, although the text block remains attached. Pages show age-toning and general handling wear. Please review the photographs closely.
