Manual of Tree and Shrub Insects by Ephraim Porter Felt is an illustrated entomology and horticulture reference examining insects that attack shade trees, forest trees, shrubs, and woody ornamental plants. For naturalists, gardeners, and collectors of early scientific books, its detailed observations sharpen awareness of insect activity and deepen understanding of the relationships between trees and the creatures that inhabit them.

Published by The Macmillan Company, New York, in 1926. The copyright page records the work’s original publication in August 1924; this copy is a later printing. Part of The Rural Manuals series, edited by L. H. Bailey. Felt is identified on the title page as State Entomologist of New York.

The text discusses tree and shrub pests, their habits, characteristic damage, and historical control methods. Black-and-white photographs and drawings illustrate insects, affected foliage, plant galls, and other identifying features. The photographed sections include destructive leaf feeders, brown-tail moth winter nests, and spruce cone-galls.

Hardcover in dark cloth with gold-colored lettering and insect designs accented by green foliage on the front cover and spine. Handwritten ownership information appears at the front, while the rear endpaper contains pencil and ink lists of locations with dates including 1926, 1927, and 1928, adding an intriguing personal detail to this scientific volume.

Condition: Good, with noticeable exterior wear. Cloth shows rubbing, scuffing, and wear along the edges, joints, corners, and spine ends, with fraying and small areas of loss. Spine is darkened, while the front cover decoration remains attractive. Pages and page edges are age toned, with scattered foxing that is heavier on the endpapers. Ownership writing and pencil notations appear at the front, and extensive handwritten notes appear on the rear endpaper. The photographed text pages remain readable, with clear illustrations. Please review all photographs for condition details.
