Native American archaeology, cave exploration, and prehistoric artifact studies. Archeological Investigations by Gerard Fowke, published in Washington by the Government Printing Office in 1922. Smithsonian Institution, Bureau of American Ethnology Bulletin 76. Original first edition hardcover.

This extensively illustrated government study documents archaeological investigations conducted throughout the United States. Major subjects include cave explorations in the Ozark region of central Missouri, cave investigations in other states, explorations along the Missouri River bluffs in Kansas and Nebraska, Aboriginal house mounds, and archaeological work in Hawaii.

The volume records prehistoric burials, human remains, pottery, stone tools, flint arrowheads and projectile points, bone awls, pins, and other excavated artifacts. Particularly notable are the photographic plates depicting discoveries from Miller’s Cave, including flint points and unusually shaped worked-bone implements. Illustrated with excavation photographs, artifact plates, skull studies, pottery, maps, and diagrams.

Original olive-green cloth hardcover with gilt spine lettering. Former Taylor Museum Library copy with an attached library pocket and catalog card on the rear pastedown. Exterior shows rubbing, edge and corner wear, and fading to the spine lettering. Pages and plates exhibit age-related toning and occasional discoloration. Binding remains intact. No dust jacket is present. Please examine all photographs carefully for the exact condition, contents, and library markings.

The standard bibliographic record calls for 204 pages, 45 pages of plates, and a folded map. The book has not been independently collated against that record and is offered as photographed.
