The Life of the Spider by J. Henri Fabre is an illustrated natural-history book exploring the remarkable world of spiders—their hunting, web building, nesting, and behavior. For nature enthusiasts and collectors, Fabre’s close observations encourage a deeper appreciation of familiar creatures and reveal the intricate lives unfolding around us.
Published in New York by Dodd, Mead and Company in 1919. Translated by Alexander Teixeira de Mattos, with a preface by Maurice Maeterlinck and illustrations by Clement B. Davis. The detailed black-and-white illustrations complement the text and add considerable visual appeal.
Hardcover bound in green cloth, with an elaborate black spider-and-web design and gilt lettering on the front cover and spine. The page edges are not gilt. A handsome antique volume for collectors of illustrated science, arachnology, and decorative bindings.
Condition: Very Good overall. Light rubbing and scattered marks to the cloth, with wear at the corners and spine ends. Foxing is most noticeable on the rear pastedown/endpaper, with age toning to the text pages and browning to the page edges. Small pencil notation on the rear pastedown. The photographed illustrations remain clear and attractive, and the covers retain strong decorative appeal. No dust jacket included. Please review all photographs for condition details.
