The Life of the Fly, with Which Are Interspersed Some Chapters of Autobiography by J. Henri Fabre — a work of insect natural history combining observations of flies with personal recollections of the author’s life.
For readers drawn to nature and scientific discovery, Fabre’s thoughtful accounts encourage curiosity, patient observation, and a greater appreciation of the complex lives of familiar insects. His autobiographical chapters add a personal perspective on the experiences behind his work.
Translated by Alexander Teixeira de Mattos. Published by Dodd, Mead and Company, New York, 1913. First American edition, with matching 1913 title-page and copyright dates.
Hardcover in russet cloth with gilt lettering on the front cover and spine, blind-stamped decoration, and a gilt top page edge. The title page features an ornamental border printed in a contrasting reddish tone.
Condition: Good. Cloth shows noticeable wrinkling and puckering, scattered spots and marks, and rubbing along the edges and joints. Corners and spine ends show wear, with small areas of fraying. Gilt lettering remains legible, and the gilt top edge retains an attractive sheen with scattered surface wear. Other page edges show age toning. The photographed interior pages are clean-looking and readable, with light toning and occasional small spots.
