Native American ethnology, language, folklore, and mythology. Fox Texts by William Jones, edited by Franz Boas and published in Leyden by Late E. J. Brill in 1907. Volume I of the Publications of the American Ethnological Society and the original 1907 edition—not a modern facsimile reprint.

This important early ethnological work preserves stories and linguistic material collected during 1901 and 1902 from the Fox, or Meskwaki, people of Iowa, with additional Sauk material. The volume presents Indigenous-language transcriptions alongside English translations and includes historical narratives, myths, traditions, parables, war stories, visions, prayers, and culture-hero tales. Complete through page 383.

Original green cloth hardcover with gilt spine lettering. Former Reading Public Museum reference-library copy with discarded bookplate, white call-number paint on the spine, and a catalog stamp on the contents page. The spine appears to have been coated with a clear protective adhesive or acrylic. Boards show rubbing, scuffing, and bumped corners. Binding is slightly cocked, with wear at the spine ends. Endpapers and pages are age-toned, with additional library residue and markings as photographed. Binding remains intact and usable. Please examine all photographs carefully.
