The Insect by Jules Michelet, a Victorian natural history work combining observations of insect life with literary and philosophical reflections on nature, illustrated by Hector Giacomelli.

Michelet’s expressive writing and Giacomelli’s intricate artwork encourage closer attention to the small creatures around us, deepening appreciation of their beauty, behavior, and place in the natural world. An appealing volume for collectors of illustrated Victorian books, natural history enthusiasts, and admirers of decorative bindings.

First English edition, published by T. Nelson and Sons, London, Edinburgh, and New York, in 1875. Translated by W. H. Davenport Adams. The title page specifies 140 illustrations by Giacomelli, including detailed full-page scenes and decorative illustrations throughout the text. The illustrated frontispiece, “The Pursuit,” is present.

Hardcover in green cloth with elaborate gilt floral, butterfly, and beehive decoration, black ivy ornament, a decorated spine, and gilt page edges.

Poor condition with substantial binding deterioration. Rear cover is loose, with the rear joint split extensively and underlying binding material exposed. Some pages are loose or detached. Spine cloth is torn and frayed, particularly at the head; corners have cloth loss and exposed board. Covers show rubbing, scratches, and scattered marks. Pages have foxing, age toning, and occasional edge wear and tears. The front cover retains attractive gilt decoration, and the photographed illustrations remain detailed and clear.
