Rare & Antiquarian Books
Theodor Schwann — Microscopical Researches into the Accordance in the Structure and Growth of Animals and Plants. Translated from the German by Henry Smith. London: Printed for the Sydenham Society, 1847. First English edition. With Matthias Jakob Schleiden’s Contributions to Phytogenesis.
An important nineteenth-century scientific work bringing together two foundational contributions to cell theory. Schwann’s investigation of animal tissues and Schleiden’s study of plant development helped establish the cellular basis of living organisms, giving this volume an enduring place in the history of biology and medicine.
Presented in the publisher’s original green cloth, with elaborate blind-stamped decoration, gilt armorial devices to the boards, and gilt spine lettering. The rear pastedown retains the binder’s ticket of Westleys & Clark, London—a pleasing surviving detail of its production.
Complete with six engraved plates: four accompanying Schwann’s research and two accompanying Schleiden’s treatise. These finely delineated illustrations depict cells and microscopic tissue structures, including a particularly striking plate of pale figures against a dark ground.
Condition: Fair overall, with a comparatively well-preserved interior. The binding shows rubbing, faded spine cloth, fraying and loss at the spine ends, worn corners with exposed board, and splits along the outer joints. Inner hinges and several text gutters are cracked, with the sewing visible in places; the volume warrants careful handling.
The text pages remain relatively clean, with light age toning and scattered foxing. The plates retain clear, delicate detail, with scattered spotting and some marginal discoloration. An ownership stamp reading “Wm. Goldie,” a handwritten inscription, and localized marks appear on the front endpapers.
A substantial early scientific volume retaining its original decorated binding and all six plates, with particular appeal to collectors of microscopy, cell biology, and the history of medicine. Please examine the photographs for the binding wear and interior condition.
