Rare 1847 first edition of Justification des Sciences Divinatoires by Mademoiselle A. Lelièvre, the pseudonym of Marc-François Guillois, published in Paris by the author and Garnier Frères. Written in French, this unusual early occult work presents a defense of divination, fortune-telling, spiritual communication, and their perceived social and therapeutic value. It also discusses women’s prominent role as diviners and fortune-tellers in nineteenth-century French society. An excellent acquisition for collectors of occultism, divination, spiritualism, esoterica, early psychology, women’s social history, and scarce French books. Hardcover in period marbled-paper boards with a brown leather spine and gilt lettering and rules. Includes the distinctive occult-themed G. Sabattini bookplate depicting a hand holding a small skull. The book shows substantial age-related wear, including heavy foxing and staining to the preliminary and final leaves, scattered foxing and tidemarks throughout, toned and soiled page edges, rubbed boards, exposed corners, edge loss, and worn leather. The rear hinge is cracked but remains attached and holding. Binding and extremities show considerable wear, as pictured. Approximately 305 pages. This is an exceptionally scarce original edition, with institutional records identifying only a few library holdings worldwide. Please examine all photographs closely for the complete condition and contents.
