Early psychology, pseudoscience, and medical history. Elements of Phrenology by George Combe, published in Boston by Marsh, Capen & Lyon in 1834. Second American Edition, improved and enlarged from the third Edinburgh edition by the author.
Combe was among the nineteenth century’s leading promoters of phrenology. This early American edition documents the historical attempt to associate areas of the human skull with personality, behavior, and mental faculties.
The volume contains one engraved plate identified as Plate II, showing phrenological head measurements and diagrams. The other originally issued illustration appears to be absent; this copy is therefore incomplete.
Original green cloth-covered boards with remnants of the printed paper spine label. Former institutional-library copy with bookplate, ownership writing, numerical markings, and marginalia. The binding is fragile: the front hinge is cracked, the text block is exposed near the front, and several leaves are weakened or nearly detached. Exterior rubbing, worn and frayed spine ends, foxing, toning, staining, and substantial tide marks are present, especially toward the back of the volume.
A scarce original 1834 second American edition offered as an incomplete historical reference copy. Please examine all photographs carefully for the exact condition and contents.
