1825 Angler’s Guide T.F. Salter 6th Ed Large Paper Extra Illustrated Fishing

$995.00
A handsome and unusually desirable large-paper copy of Thomas Frederick Salter’s classic early British fishing work, The Angler’s Guide, published in London by Sherwood and Co. in 1825. Sixth edition, carefully corrected and enlarged.

This extensive 382-page treatise covers bottom fishing, trolling, fly-fishing, sea fishing, rods, lines, hooks, bait preparation, artificial flies, seasonal angling, and the rivers Thames and Lea.

This special copy is extra-illustrated and contains numerous engraved illustrations and plates, including three hand-colored fish plates, angling-apparatus plates, an engraved portrait frontispiece, and a folding map of the River Lea. The larger paper format provides generous margins and a particularly impressive presentation.

Beautifully rebound in modern half calf with raised spine bands, gilt lettering and decoration, marbled paper boards, leather corners, and top-edge gilt. Includes the illustrated bookplate of noted angling-book collector Jeffrey Norton. An earlier auction catalog description identifying the book as an extra-illustrated large-paper copy is affixed inside.

Condition is very good for a book published more than 200 years ago. Binding remains handsome and secure with light exterior rubbing. Pages show expected age toning, scattered foxing, edge wear, occasional small marks, and several old paper repairs or reinforcements. A small colored mark appears near the final page number. Folding map and illustrated plates remain present as shown. Please examine all photographs carefully for the precise condition and contents of this distinctive antiquarian copy.
