Appleton and Company, New York. The title page of Volume I is dated 1901. The English translation is revised by E. Ray Lankester.

The work examines the development of Earth and its inhabitants through natural causes, with particular attention to the evolutionary theories of Darwin, Goethe, and Lamarck.

Illustrated with biological diagrams and plates, including a blue comparative anatomy plate titled “Hand of Nine different Mammals,” illustrations of amoeba reproduction, and a striking color folding map depicting Haeckel’s historical hypothesis of human origins and geographical dispersal, including the proposed continent of Lemuria.

Both volumes are bound in matching brown cloth hardcovers with gilt spine lettering and decorative borders on the boards.

Condition: Fair. Volume I has pronounced tearing and cloth loss at the head of the spine, exposing the underlying binding material; Volume II has smaller losses and wear in the same area. Water staining and discoloration are visible on the preliminary paper, particularly along the outer and lower edges. A blank preliminary leaf has an irregular edge tear with paper loss. Page edges are darkened, and pages show age toning and occasional spotting. The pictured text and illustrations remain readable, and the folding map retains strong color with visible fold creases.
